Ohio freshman men's cross-country runner Ridge Robinson kicked off his Bobcat career by leading his team to a first-place finish at the Ohio University Green and White Invitational on Sept. 9. Tomorrow, he looks to keep it up at the Notre Dame Invitational in South Bend, Ind. The Post's Justin Whelan caught up with Robinson at practice yesterday.
Post: The name Ridge is kind of a unique name. Is there any significance or special meaning behind it?
Robinson: My mom actually named me after a character on the soap opera The Bold and the Beautiful, I think.
Post: What about race-day preparation? What do you do to get ready for a race?
Robinson: I'd pretty much just have to say that I get up and eat a good breakfast and make sure I'm drinking a lot of fluids and stuff and I pretty much just prepare mentally. I think about things I have to do in my race, you know, what I have to do to get ready and how I have to go about things in the race to accomplish my goal.
Post: Do you have any superstitions?
Robinson: Maybe just over-stretching and eating and/or drinking shortly before my race.
Post: What kind of music do you prefer before a race?
Robinson: Anything heavy, really. Just something to get my blood flowing.
Post: Running for 25-plus minutes in an 8K can get kind of lonely, I'm sure. Can you recall the most random thought you've had while running a race?
Robinson: Why do I run this?
Post: Other than running track and cross country, what is your favorite sport?
Robinson: Probably basketball. I just like the pace and everything and it's just a really energetic season. It's just crazy out on the floor with everyone playing and everything.
Post: What about a marathon? Have you run one in the past or have you given it any thought?
Robinson: No, I haven't run one but I would like to possibly after college sometime.
Post: Do you have one picked out?
Robinson: Maybe the New York (City) Marathon, I'm not really sure. It would definitely be something cool to do, though.
