A Sigma Phi Epsilon member pleaded not guilty to assault yesterday for allegedly punching another member in the face.
Ohio University sophomore Cameron Guild, 20, pleaded not guilty to one count of assault before Athens County Municipal Court Judge William Grim.
The charge stems from an altercation in January when Guild allegedly punched freshman and fellow member Nick Wood, 19, in the face, according to an Athens Police report.
The incident happened on East Washington Street, where the fraternity house is located, but it is unclear if it occurred inside or outside the house, according to the report.
Wood received medical treatment near his home and has returned to school, according to the report.
As part of his bond, Guild is not allowed to have contact with Wood, Grim said.
Neither Guild nor Wood live in the Sigma Phi Epsilon house.
Assault is a first-degree misdemeanor. Guild could spend a maximum of 180 days in jail and pay a maximum fine of $1,000 if convicted, according to the Ohio Revised Code.
Guild is due back in court at 8 a.m. Feb. 22 for a preliminary hearing.
