Ohio University Senior Associate Vice President and Dean of Students Terry Hogan announced Tuesday that he is leaving the university for a position at the University of Northern Iowa as vice president for educational and student services.
At this point, the university does not have plans to immediately replace Hogan.
Hogan was selected for the position at UNI after a colleague nominated him last May.
Hogan said he decided to take the position because it was a good professional opportunity.
The opportunity at Northern Iowa is an exceptional one
he said. It utilizes knowledge I already have and it's a great community'similar to Athens.
Hogan said he also chose UNI because it has more of a focus on undergraduate programs and less of a research agenda than OU.
Hogan will start his new position Aug. 13, and in his new role at UNI he will oversee campus life, housing, health and recreational services, multicultural education and enrollment services.
His decision to leave OU comes after 30 years of experience with the institution. Hogan is a three-time OU alumnus, having earned a Bachelor of Science in communication in 1977, a Master of Arts in organizational communication in 1979 and a doctorate in higher education administration in 1992. He has held the position of dean of students since 1998.
Hogan's departure is a loss for the university, said Tim Vonville, OU Student Senate president.
When I first heard the news I was a little bit disheartened that OU is losing such a great force in student affairs on campus
he said.
Vonville credits Hogan with being a positive force communicating and interacting with students and also sees Hogan as paramount in kick-starting and overseeing many services beneficial to students.
He also added that he expects whoever replaces Hogan to be firmly committed to positions that Hogan is committed to.
Current plans to replace Hogan are still sketchy. At this point in time, an interim dean of students will not be named, said Kent Smith, vice president for student affairs. There will be reorganization and redistribution of Hogan's duties among senior leadership at the university until a new dean is hired.
The goal is to have the position filled by January 2008, Smith said.
