Women's golf rests in sixth through first day of 'The Preview'

On Monday, the Ohio women’s golf team finished the first day of action at The Preview in Fishers, Ind., as the Bobcats sit in sixth place out of 16 teams midway through the 36-hole event.

The Bobcats hold a combined score of 326 strokes at the challenging Hawthorns Golf & Country Club, which puts them at 38-over-par for the tournament. Ohio trails the leader Toledo by 22 strokes (16-over-par).

Sitting atop the Bobcat leaderboard is senior Kristen Helmsdoerfer, who is part of a three-way tie for 8th place with a score of 78 (six-over-par). She scored even on the front nine, but then faltered on the back holes.

In addition to Helmsdoerfer, Ohio senior Kara Brinkman sits in a nine-way tie for 11th place with a score of 79 after the first day. However, she led all golfers in completed par attempts with 13.

Ball State’s Jenna Hague is the tournament’s leader with a score of 72, placing her at even-par after the first round.

Also in action for Ohio was freshman Hailey Hrynewich, who notched a score of 84 for 12-over-par.  She rests in the 51st place, along with six others including fellow Bobcat sophomore Lauren McKinzie.

In order to best its total from last year’s tournament, Ohio needs to score a combined score of 325 strokes or less Tuesday, which would be one stroke better than Monday’s performance. If Ohio is to catch Toledo, the Bobcats need to pull off a significant improvement.

Barring no weather delays, tee-off for the second day of action is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. Tuesday.
