Swimming: Ohio wins first meet back from break

Ohio's rigorous six-week endurance training during winter break has produced immediate results.

Sophomore Rachel Heim won three events as Ohio defeated Denison 171-121.

Heim swam the third leg of the 200-yard medley relay with a team time of 1:45.83. She also won the 200-yard butterfly (2:05.25) and the 100-yard freestyle (52.03.)

She also swam the third leg of the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:31.23), in which Ohio touched the wall first.

During holiday training we actually split up into groups a lot

Heim said. So I was able to work a lot of sprint but that was my best 200 fly of the season; so I would say it helped my endurance.

Heim boosted the Bobcats to a landslide victory over D-III Denison (3-3, 2-1 North Coast Atlantic Conference). Ohio (4-2, 2-2 Mid-American Conference) finished first in 14 of 16 events.

The Bobcats had already won the meet by the 12th event, reaching the 150.5 plateau that teams need to win a dual meet.

Coach Greg Werner said he was very happy with his team's performance, and added that some times were significantly lower than those at the Akron Invitational, which was the last meet the team swam (Dec. 7).

I knew that some were going to be good Werner said. But I knew that some were going to be a little rusty as well. And that's what we saw. We saw some that were exceptional and we saw some that still have a little work to do.

Werner also noted that the team was hoping to get back into its regular schedule of competing once or twice a week with the Denison meet.

Huber back from injury

Sophomore Stacey Huber won the 1650-yard freestyle (17:06.71.) It was just the second meet she has participated in this year, the Akron Invitational being the first meet that she swam in this year.

Huber said that she was able to train at full speed over break after breaking her foot in a self-defense class.

I broke my foot in five places

Huber said. This is the fastest time I've been compared to last season in season. I wasn't expecting to go that fast and now I know that I am still in contention of winning.
