Your Turn: Initiative hides gambling under education mask

The ad in the Oct. 17 Post by the proponents of Issue 3 is the most misleading and deceitful proposal. The issue is cynically called Learn and Earn

but it is about expanding gambling in Ohio. Seven racetracks and two new sites in Cleveland will have a monopoly on slot machines and receive windfall profits. The proponents of Issue 3 claim that millions of dollars will be provided for scholarships, but how can you trust the word of people who are so dishonest in their ads?

According to the Columbus Dispatch, the state Office of Budget and Management concluded that Issue 3 will provide only half the money the proponents are advertising. Also only 30 percent of the revenue will go for scholarships. The majority of the revenue will go to the racetrack and casino owners. This proposal will do very little to help solve the education problems of Ohio. Expansion of gambling has been on the ballot twice and it has been defeated twice. The gambling proponents are now trying to slip it through by hiding it under the pretense of providing scholarships. I do not think it is good public policy to put proposals that give economic benefits to a small group of business owners into the Ohio Constitution. I urge all voters to reject this scam and vote NO on Issue 3. ' Philip Perry writes from Athens. 17
