Students for Law, Justice & Culture will be having their first official meeting of the semester tonight at 7 p.m. to bring students together who share an interest in law.
The organization was formed as a part of a student-initiative under the Center for Law, Justice & Culture.
The CLJC "is an interdisciplinary academic community dedicated to advancing scholarship and teaching by integrating programs and uniting faculty and students who share a common interest in law’s constitutive and formative role in cultural, political and social life,” according to its website.
“The SLJC seeks to foster that same kind of environment outside of class work and official research. We want to support and participate in Center programming while also organizing student-led events,” said President Katie Conlon.
The meetings will be a place for students to come together and discuss issues that relate to law, justice and culture. Students involved will also help organize events through the CLJC.
However, the meetings are only a piece of the club’s organizational puzzle.
“This semester, we are co-sponsoring the Anthropology of International Justice Series with STAND Against Genocide and Anthropology Club and helping organize a panel with the CLJC during Empowering Women of Ohio Week,” said Conlon, a sophomore studying history.
The panel, “Gender, Protest, and New Media in Global Context,” will feature three professors giving their perspectives on recent protest movements against rape culture and other gender-based forms of discrimination.
“I think this group is important because it helps foster an environment on campus where students interested in issues about law and criminal justice, whether locally, domestically, or internationally, can come together and start a dialogue about relevant issues on campus,” Conlon said. “I see it as a way to connect students from all disciplines with one another and to connect with faculty who are experts on these issues in their fields.”
