MAC names week's top players

The Mid-American Conference announced the Football Players of the Week yesterday.

Each of the MAC's Michigan universities garnered recognition for the West Division for Saturday's games.

Central Michigan running back Ontario Sneed was named the West Division Offensive Player of the Week for his contributions to Chippewas' 31-17 win over Akron. Sneed carried the ball 21 times for 183 yards of his team's total 260, scoring a touchdown and adding 77 yards and two other scores with his six receptions.

Daniel Holtzclaw, a linebacker for Eastern Michigan, received the West Division Defensive Player of the Week for helping the Eagles beat Kent State 27-20 to claim a first-place ranking in the West Division. Holtzclaw intercepted and returned a ball for eight yards, had two solo tackles and nine assists.

Punter Jim Laney of Western Michigan was named the West Division Special Teams Player of the Week for giving the Broncos good field position in their 31-21 win over Buffalo. Laney averaged 39.6 yards per kick on seven punts with a 47-yard punt and kept the Buffalo Bulls inside their own 20-yard line.

Bowling Green cornerback Jelani Jordan was awarded the East Division Defensive Player of the Week honors for the Falcons' 70-7 win over Temple. Jordan achieved a career-high two pass interceptions, helping the Falcons force a season-high five turnovers. He also added five tackles and a tackle for a loss.

Miami reclaims Victory Bell Two Miami players played a key role in the RedHawks' win in the annual battle for the bell rivalry game against Cincinnati.

Martin Nance, a force for Miami at wide receiver, was honored as the East Division Offensive Player of the Week in the 44-16 win over Cincinnati and totaled a season-high 119 yards receiving and eight receptions for two touchdowns.

Place kicker Todd Soderquist, named East Division Special Teams Player of the Week, tied his career-high of 13 points in a single game, which included three of four field goals in the first three quarters. Soccer awards handed out The MAC annnounced Eastern Michigan's Michele Lawrence as the MAC Women's Soccer Player of the Week. The forward helped the Eagles to obtain a 3-1 record in the MAC and improve their overall record to 5-6-1.

Against Buffalo on Friday, she scored a hat trick in a 3-0 shutout, becoming only the third Eastern Michigan player to score three goals in a single game. She also scored the game-winning goal on a penalty kick with 32 seconds remaining in the game for victory over Kent State on Saturday.

Having played and started all Eastern Michigan's games, she leads the Eagles with six goals and one assist for 13 points, 23 shots with a .261 shooting percentage, 15 shots-on-goal, three game-winning goals and two penalty kicks attempted and made.

Buffalo forward Andrae Clarke was named MAC Men's Soccer Player of the Week after scoring three goals and recording one assist against Canisius and Boston. The Jamaican native's ten assists for the season currently ranks as the best in the nation and broke Buffalo's record for most assists in a season.
