The Ohio baseball team is currently riding the momentum of a season-best four-game winning-streak.
It began two Sundays ago at home when a Brian White homerun in the bottom of the 10th inning sent the Miami RedHawks packing. The come-from-behind win was the first victory for Ohio (7-12 overall, 2-2 Mid-American Conference) in MAC play.
After the victory against Miami, Ohio coach Joe Carbone felt the win could act as a spark for the club.
Hopefully this gives us impetus to get on a winning streak
Carbone said. Winning streaks are more important than losing streaks.
The good news for the Bobcats is that a winning streak is exactly what has resulted. Ohio carried its momentum throughout the next week.
Ohio defeated Cleveland State 8-4 thanks to some great relief work courtesy of John Angelicchi and Yale Silverman. The following day the team traveled to the University of Cincinnati where the team won 8-3 behind the solid pitching of starter Luke Howard.
The Bobcats won their fourth in a row this past Friday. Ohio won at Kent State (13-10, 2-2) by a score of 6-2 before the following two games of the series were cancelled due to poor weather conditions.
Despite not playing since last Friday, Ohio will look to continue its winning streak against non-conference opponent Xavier. Not being able to play during the weekend may disrupt the chemistry and momentum the Bobcats built during the past week.
However, Carbone said the team needs to focus on playing smart baseball and forget about the concept of momentum.
All that momentum stuff has nothing to do with baseball Carbone said.
The team is looking strong and currently playing some of its best baseball this season. This week's games are crucial if Ohio wants to pull within reach of an even record.
Ohio will try to extend its winning streak to five today when Rob Harmon (2-2) goes to the mound. The Bobcats play at 3 p.m. today at Xavier University.
