Editorial: Too little, too late

Last Friday at 8 a.m., the Athens Police Department put up signs advising Mill Street residents that no cars could be parked on their street starting on Saturday.

The next day, 32 cars were towed.

Athens Police Capt. Tom Pyle acknowledged the department's actions were inconsiderate

but he said they were within the letter of the law. Inconsiderate does not begin to describe it. Because of the police department's laziness, 32 car owners likely will be facing about $100 fines or fees to get their cars back.

The ironic part of this story is that the police were being considerate when they decided to clear Mill Street during Palmerfest. The ban was enforced to prevent vandalism that has been common at Palmerfest in years past.

A simple 48-hour notice before the cars were towed would have solved this problem ' Fridays, particularly, are a bad day to let students know their cars need to be moved. In the future, police should consider the convenience of car owners in addition to the safety of their vehicles. For now, they owe 32 car owners a sincere apology.
