Soccer: Early goal 'key to victory' for 'Cats

Sara Seitz understands the importance of scoring early.

The freshman midfielder did just that in Ohio's 4-1 victory over Miami yesterday. Seitz scored in the first minute off a cross from junior Amy Lower. The goal was needed coming off a 2-0 loss to Ball State on Friday.

It started us off well

Seitz said. (The goal) got everybody even more pumped up than we were for the start.

The goal set the tone for the Bobcats, who would score two more goals in the first half. Senior Erika Schmitt and Lower added the other two goals in the 10th and 26th minutes, respectively.

(The goal) was the key to victory coach Stacy Strauss said. Given how young we are we are fairly fragile. It made a huge difference for us to score early rather than getting scored upon early.

The Bobcats were scored upon early in their match against Ball State on Friday. The Cardinals' Emily Rein scored from six yards out in the fourth minute, setting the tone for Ball State.

The Cardinals controlled the ball for most of the game and had 15 shots on goal.

Following the loss, Strauss changed the lineup.

Junior Jasmine Merith started at forward, playing alongside Lower and Schmitt. This added an offensive dimension that the Bobcats missed against Ball State.

(Merith) is someone that other teams are constantly aware of

Strauss said. She gives us a pretty dangerous three (forwards).

Merith contributed to the offensive outburst, assisting on Schmitt's goal. She also scored in the 57th minute off a Schmitt rebound.

We put in a conscious effort to connect up front

Merith said. Communication helped as well as movement up top.

Even Merith knew the enormity of Seitz's early goal.

The old saying is 'the team that scores first definitely has the advantage

' she said. That goal in the first half gave us a huge

momentous push forward.
