It's with mixed feelings that I read in last Friday's paper that our athletics director, Kirby Hocutt, is leaving for the University of Miami's athletic program and Kathy Krendl is trying to get the top job at Elmhurst. I guess it is to be expected; these top bureaucrats are only participating in the social climbing and individual opportunism that corporate culture promotes in this society.
Corporate bureaucracies like our administration are built on these principles. Work from where you are, and look for a promotion. What this process lacks, though, is a focus on community concerns. This alienation, between these individuals and the community to which they govern, has lead to some pretty tragic decisions. They can rationalize cutting four sports programs midyear, or withholding student control over our general body funds.
