Grad students enroll, applications rise

This Winter Quarter at Ohio University graduate student enrollment and applications experienced an increase, reducing concerns after a decline in Fall Quarter enrollment.

Enrollment

as of today is exactly the same or in fact

a little ahead of where it was on this day last quarter

said Michael Mumper, Graduate Student Senate advisor, at last night's senate meeting.

Graduate student applications rose 25 percent this quarter compared to last year, an increase over one year of 150 domestic applications and 150 international applications, Mumper said.

This year student applications from China and India seem to have bounced back up

which are the two countries that import the most graduate students

Mumper said. It is encouraging that things are moving along both domestically and internationally.

Graduate Student Senate is also undergoing improvements, such as a funding initiative to help students meet and become familiar with department representatives, similar to a Meet and Greet campaign, said Liz Miller, senate vice president for committees and legislative affairs.

Senate members plan to send a flyer to graduate students, giving biographical information about each representative next to his or her picture, said Natalie Pariano, vice president for communications.

Senators also encouraged graduate students to apply for grants, for which applications are now arriving.

Also at the meeting, Mumper recommended that senate select an outstanding faculty member to speak at the June 2007 commencement. If senate chooses a professor, the name will be announced at this year's commencement, and the professor will have the opportunity to practice in time for next year, he said.
