Get to know the local faces outside of OU's campus

Athens might be a college town, but the city government in place attempts to keep the university students and other citizens in harmony.

Students have valid input, and their studies at Ohio University can be valuable to city ideas, Mayor Paul Wiehl said, adding that students should contact council members and other city officials when they have suggestions.

“They should study what the issues are (and) what they think should be done,” Wiehl said. “That’s the thing to do if you feel the need for something to happen.”

But getting involved in the city and getting involved in city government are different, Wiehl said.

“Interaction with the city can be as simple as taking a walk down Court Street,” he said. “Explore it. You’re going to be here for four years.”
