Veteran administrator fills in as VP for student affairs

After Vice President for Student Affairs Michael Sostarich announced his retirement effective Dec. 31, the university appointed Richard Carpinelli, former associate vice president for student affairs, to fill the position in an interim capacity.

In a Nov. 22 news conference, Ohio University President Roderick McDavis announced the appointment of Carpinelli, who began serving effective Sunday. In addition to being associate vice president for student affairs, Carpinelli also has been director of Baker University Center since August 2003, according to an OU Communications and Marketing press release.

Carpinelli succeeds Sostarich, who had been vice president for student affairs since June 2000, after serving in an interim capacity for two years. At the end of 2005, Sostarich retired after a 31-year career at OU.

Since 1984, Carpinelli has been with the university in some capacity. He was on residence life staff until 1986 before serving as director of University Judiciaries until 2000. In 1998, Carpinelli served as interim assistant to the vice president for student affairs before becoming assistant vice president in 2000.

A native of Pompton Plains, N.J., Carpinelli has a bachelor's degree in business administration from Slippery Rock University in Slippery Rock, Pa., and earned a master's degree in college student personnel from OU in 1987, according to the release.

The search to find a permanent replacement for the vice presidency is expected to end July 1, 2006. While Sostarich previously moved from interim vice president to vice president, Carpinelli has chosen to not be a candidate for the permanent position, according to the press release.
