With about a week left until Halloween and the Block Party fast approaching, pumpkin festivities are in full swing.
Children from Athens visited East Green at Ohio University Tuesday night as they trick-or-treated around the residence halls for tRAC-or-Treat, an event hosted by the Residents’ Action Council, or tRAC.
The event runs three days, with the final tRAC-or-Treat taking place on West Green from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday night. Tuesday’s event took place on East Green while Monday’s candy was passed out on South Green.
“tRAC is a student organization that strives to create the best on-campus living environment through advocacy, programming and leadership development,” according to the organization’s website.
This is the first year since 2007 that the event was held on all three greens, said Rachel Lambert, tRAC’s national communications coordinator. Children have received candy on campus every year since the 1990s.
tRAC has been meeting every Monday since Fall Semester began to plan the event, Lambert said.
“Since Athens County is one of the poorer counties (in Ohio), tRAC-or-Treat is a great way to give back to the community,” said Ford Clark, vice president of marketing for tRAC.
Clark said he distributed flyers about the event to area schools.
Each residence hall on each green decorated their dorm with various Halloween decorations including balloons, spider webbing and various ghost and goblin decorations.
Aaron Goldstein, vice president of programming for tRac, facilitated the events and games during the three-day event.
Children participated in games like pumpkin bowling, ring tossing and cookie decorating, Goldstein said.
And it isn’t only the children who enjoy tRAC-or-Treat. Parents see it as a good way to celebrate the spooky holiday as well.
“I really enjoy this event because there is not a lot of traffic and people all at once,” said Amanda McCormick, the parent of a child dressed as a piece of bacon for the event.
