A bill was introduced in late April in the Ohio General Assembly to ban all abortions, 31 years after the Roe v. Wade decision made abortion legal nationwide.
Rep. Tom Brinkman, R-Cincinnati, introduced House Bill 228 on April 28. Brinkman's bill would ban abortions in all cases -without exception.
I find it disheartening that our state representatives would try to devote their time to something that is unconstitutional
said Linsey Pecikonis, Women's Affairs commissioner for Student Senate at Ohio University.
She said representatives should spend time on issues such as the economy and higher education.
As representatives they should speak for the people and they are not doing that in any way. Many people may think abortion is not right
but it is necessary in some situations.
The goal of the bill is to pass a law that will prove to be a test case before the U.S. Supreme Court to overturn Roe v. Wade, Brinkman said. I'm not counting on it. I'm assuming there will be some turnover
he said.
OU College Republican and Pro-Life Club member Annie Mitchell said the bill is honorable but obviously will not work because there are federal laws against it.
I totally support banning abortions. I think life matters over what is called liberty of the body. I consider abortion murder
and if murders are banned from happening
I don't see how abortion
which doctors say is killing a life
is not illegal
she said.
If I was a citizen of Ohio
I would be outraged that they are going to spend a lot of taxpayers' money on something we all know will be made unconstitutional
