Your Turn: Post columns lack perspective, resemble 'idle chatter'

Prominently displayed on the first page of each Post are the editorials, giving students the unique opportunity to address social, cultural and political concerns. Unfortunately this opportunity is being wasted on a regular basis. During a time with such turbulent events affecting our lives, I consistently read columns from students who seem to be lost in their own world.

This quarter alone I've already had the displeasure of learning about why reality TV is fun or what E! News recently passed off as a story. From a debate article where the contributors always agree to a humor column where the only joke is how it got picked up for a second quarter, these perspectives come off as nothing more than idle chatter.

The smoking divide, morning after pill, sport cuts, the Iraq War's influence on our generation ' all ideas that concern a majority of readers. And still I'm forced to read about how someone is awkward or how they fixed a chair, which just speaks to intellectual laziness. If it's supposed to be a humor column, then it should attempt more than citing this 'fact' multiple times as filler and actually make someone laugh. To revamp the old adage, if you have nothing important to say, don't say anything at all.Jeff Steinbrunner is a junior English major.
