'Convenient' technology makes tanning a click away

Several Athens tanning salons have updated their operations to appeal to Ohio University students, who increasingly depend on the conveniences of modern technology.

Tropical Tanning Salon on West State Street and Outer Glow and Attractions salons on Court Street allow their clients to schedule appointments online, which can be more convenient than scheduling by phone.

At home

all of the tanning salons were walk-in only said Erin Scott, a Gahanna, Ohio, native. But everyone tans here. You have to schedule an appointment and online scheduling is really convenient

said the OU senior, who tans at Outer Glow.

I don't have to keep calling

asking for different times or worry about getting a busy signal. I can just look at my computer screen

said Caitlin Holland, an OU freshman who also prefers online scheduling.

James Ross, co-owner of Outer Glow, which opened in January, said the majority of his clients use online appointment scheduling.

One piece of technology unique locally to Outer Glow is a fingerprint scanner that eliminates air and time and monitors employees' hours and customers' sessions, said Ross.

I think it saves time

but it is a little unnecessary

said freshman Sarah Sadek. I understand the purpose

though. I used to let my friends use any of my leftover sessions

so it does make sense.

Some students see more important factors than the conveniences of technology when deciding where to tan locally.

Whether a salon is within walking distance is definitely important

especially because I don't have a car
