Miami softball wins 2 in weekend

Whether it was on the mound or at the plate, Miami pitcher Jackie Poggendorf was too much for the Ohio softball team in yesterday's doubleheader.

She threw a no-hitter in the first game and earned a win-in-relief in the second to lead Miami to victory in both of Sunday's contests.

The Bobcats (11-22 overall, 0-7 Mid-American Conference) were shut out 6-0 as Poggendorf threw the first no-hitter in six years for the Redhawks (17-15 , 5-2 MAC). If keeping the Bobcats hitless was not enough, Poggendorf also led Miami at the plate by going 3-4 and scoring two runs.

She shut us down

Coach Roanna Brazier said. She did a great job pitching as well as hitting against us.

Miami jumped on Ohio pitcher Zoe Heim early by scoring all six of its runs in the first two innings. Miami took a 1-0 lead in the first when Poggendorf scored on a throwing error by Ohio catcher Marian Davis. The Redhawks then sent all nine batters to the plate in the second inning, scoring five more runs to put the game away.

Heim left after the second inning after allowing six runs -four earned -on seven hits. Brazier felt that it was the defense, not Heim, which allowed Miami to score so much.

Zoe didn't do too badly today Brazier said. We just didn't play good defense behind her today.

The lone bright spot for the Bobcats in game one may have been the relief performance of pitcher Kerri Harley. She held the Redhawks scoreless in her four innings of relief and allowed only three hits.

In game two, Ohio scored first when Jenny Tisevich drove home Kelly Rodriguez with a single to second to go up 1-0 after the first. The Bobcats held onto the lead until the bottom of the fourth, when Miami scored two runs courtesy of two Bobcat errors to go up 2-1.

Ohio knotted it back up in the top of the fifth inning when Rodriguez scored the Bobcats final run on a Shannon Weidner double. Everything unraveled for Ohio in the bottom of the fifth inning when Miami struck for five runs to put Ohio away 7-2. Despite the two losses, Brazier was impressed by her team's resiliency after getting no hits in the first game.

We didn't roll over and die Brazier said. It was a great game before the bottom of the fifth inning.

Ohio will look to avoid a sweep at the hands of Miami when they finish the series today at noon with a single game in Oxford.
