Three men accused of committing two armed robberies pleaded not guilty at their arraignment hearings Wednesday.
Jason Johnson, 30, pleaded not guilty to two counts of aggravated robbery and one count of tampering with evidence for allegedly robbing the Citizen’s Bank in Nelsonville and Jewell’s Drive Thru Carryout in Glouster.
Timothy Orsborne, 34, and Anthony Carey, 32, both pleaded not guilty to one count of aggravated burglary for allegedly helping Johnson in the robbery of Jewell’s Drive Thru Carryout.
Johnson is from Albany and Orsborne and Carey are from Glouster.
During the alleged robbery of the carryout, Johnson allegedly entered the store with a handgun and Orsborne was allegedly driving the getaway car. Carey was also allegedly in the car and aware of what was going on, Athens County Prosecutor Keller Blackburn said.
Johnson allegedly used the same gun during the bank robbery.
Blackburn said $3,000 was stolen from the bank and about $200 was stolen from the carryout store. He said drugs were the motive for both robberies.
Orsborne had four other charges of receiving stolen property, burglary, illegal use of government benefits and possession of heroin. He pleaded not guilty to those charges, according to a news release from Blackburn’s office.
Carey also pleaded not guilty to one count of burglary for allegedly entering a residence in October and stealing money and jewelry, according to the release.
Johnson was sentenced to three years in prison Friday for a different case. He pleaded not guilty to one count of burglary and one count of theft from the elderly. The theft took place on Dec. 20, 2011 in Glouster, according to the release.
All three men are currently being held on bond at the Southeastern Ohio Regional Jail.
Johnson is due back in court for a preliminary hearing Dec. 21. Carey and Orsborne are due back Dec. 19.
