A union representing more than 630 Ohio University employees has served a strike notice.
Hundreds of custodians, cooks and maintenance workers who are represented by the Local 1699 of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees could walk out next Friday, the day after their contract expires.
James Kemper, vice president of finance, wrote in an e-mail to university employees that he is hopeful there won't be a strike, as negotiations with the union are going well.
In the event that a strike occurs
the university will remain open and operate with the minimum possible disruption he wrote.
The collective bargaining agreement requires the union to file a strike notice 10 days before a striking. The workers have the option to strike the day after their contract expires on March 1.
A lot of unions will (file a strike notice) as a matter of record ... just to be certain they still have that option. said Arthur Marziale, executive director of the Ohio State Employment Board. That's fairly standard.
Officials with the union could not be reached because they are in contract negotiations with the university this morning.
