OU sophomore to pay fine, spend time in jail for theft

An Ohio University sophomore pleaded guilty to one count of theft Monday.

Travis Koury, 20, pleaded guilty to one count of theft, a fifth degree-felony, as part of a plea agreement with the Athens County Prosecutor's Office.

Koury was charged with theft and receiving stolen property after he stole a Lenovo X61 Thinkpad laptop from an OU utility vehicle in the South Green Garage May 28.

When Daniel Post, an OU Information Technology worker, found the vehicle June 1, one of the windows was removed and the laptop was missing.

A warrant was issued for Koury Sept. 8. He was indicted in Athens County Court of Common Pleas Sept. 13.

As part of the plea agreement, Koury will have to pay a $2,000 fine and spend 13 days in jail. After he is released from jail, he will have to enter the prosecutor's diversion program, according to court documents.

The receiving stolen property charge was dropped. If Koury does not meet the terms of the agreement, he could spend up to 12 months in prison.
