First-year debaters win national championships

Six members of Ohio University's forensics team defeated competitors from 41 other schools to win the Novice National Forensics Championships at the University of West Florida this past weekend.

The team won 21 individual awards and four individual national titles in categories such as dramatic duo, persuasive speaking and prose interpretation. Sophomore Jill Flauto won the title of Novice National Champion in the Individual Sweepstakes.

Only students in their first year of college speech and debate participate in the Novice National Championships, said Dan West, director of Forensics and coach of the team. The entire forensic team will participate in the National Championships at the University of Tennessee in April.

We were 11th place last year

West said. I am pretty confident we will be in the top 10.

The freshmen compose half of the team this year, added West, adding that performing well at Nationals this year will help the forensics team recruit new member and perform better year after year.
