Two retailers in Athens recently reported more than $2,000 in stolen and damaged property.
Wal-Mart's loss prevention department at 929 E. State St. recovered $1,537.97 in stolen property on Dec. 31, according to a news release from the Athens Police Department.
Brian Durham, 37, of Racine, Ohio, and Amanda Bennett, 29, of Mason, W. Va., were caught with the stolen property in their car.
Durham, wearing a wig and a blue hooded sweatshirt, purchased a 42 LCD hi-definition television and loaded it into his car. After removing the wig and the sweatshirt
Durham returned to the store and went to the customer service desk with the receipt and another television from the store.
Durham claimed he had bought the second television when at the customer service desk according to the police report.
Other items stolen found in the car include makeup DVDs
heaters
computer cables
blue jeans and cookware. The wig and blue hooded sweatshirt are being held as evidence
according to the police report.
Durham has been charged with grand theft and possession of a criminal tool (because of wearing a disguise). Bennett was charged with complicity to grand theft.
Wal-Mart was not the only store to report theft.
