Post Letter: Naive questions

I am delighted to read that there is a rush to buy tickets for future Bobcat football games. It will be a big step toward paying for the other exciting news I read: coach Frank Solich is being paid almost $500,000 as base salary plus a retention payment of $275,000. In addition, there are unspecified “guaranteed bonuses” and other small change items hardly worth mentioning (mere thousands).

I have three, no doubt, quite naive questions:

Naive question No. 1: If you are being paid almost half a million dollars to do your job, why do you need half that amount again to fulfill your contract?

Naive question No. 2: I thought bonuses were awarded for results over and above your expected performance. How can that be “guaranteed”?

Naive question No. 3: Why aren’t students (and their parents) outraged about this (mis)use of their money?

Just wondering.
