The Athens Fire Department responded to a call around 7 p.m. that a truck had hit a telephone pole at the intersection of East State Street and Stimson Avenue, causing severe damage.
Upon arriving at the scene, no vehicle was found and all that was left was a badly damaged telephone pole. There is no estimated cost of damages as of now, said Joe Bycofski, an Athens City firefighter.
“We have to replace it and we have no idea who did it,” Bycofski said. “The telephone line, cable and electrical line will have to be replaced.”
Because there was no vehicle at the scene, it’s considered a hit and run, and those involved with the accident could face a fine and criminal charges, he added.
