If one person embodied the phrase there is no I in team
that person could easily be Ohio lacrosse attacker Kiersten McLouth.
Every time someone asks McLouth about herself, she simply passes the credit onto her teammates. In fact, this freshman from Centreville, Va., rarely acknowledges herself as the Bobcats' leading scorer.
It just kind of happened even though I expected to make an impact as a freshman I didn't really see it happening
McLouth said. It was a big surprise
but I have great support
and it is a great feeling to know everyone is helping me.
Indeed, McLouth couldn't expect to lead the team in goals and overall points as a freshman ' she knew she'd be playing alongside Ohio standout Dana Dobbie. Dobbie led the Bobcats in both goals and assists last year but was red-shirted this year after having surgery on both ankles. This opened a spot up that McLouth would fill well.
With a team-high of 27 points (22 goals and 5 assists), she has taken over the job of finding the net for Ohio, but she insists she would rather have Dobbie on the turf with her.
I wish she was out there with me; our team could definitely use her
McLouth said. But without her
I know I have to step up and find a way to score.
At the start of the season, McLouth still was recovering from shin injuries she sustained from fall practices. However, that didn't keep her from helping the team ' everyone suffers injuries, she said.
Coach Allison Valentino said McLouth is constantly working to get better and doing what is asked of her on and off the field.
That is her ' she will do whatever is asked. (The coaches) certainly didn't say
'Hey
you are going be our leading scorer
' she just does whatever is needed
