What is Global Public Health-London?
If you have ever wanted to study abroad, but didn't have the time or money to devote an entire quarter to this pursuit, consider taking Global Public Health (London) during the Ohio University Winter Intersession in December. The course typically begins with a bird's eye tour of London from the British Airways London Eye Ferris wheel in Central London, after which students follow in the footsteps of the renowned epidemiologist John Snow and his investigation of one of the many Central London Cholera epidemics in the 1850's (including lunch at the John Snow Pub).
The class hotel is literally across the street from the world-famous British Museum of Natural History, with its historical record of mankind for the last 10 million years. Other museums under consideration include the London Science Museum, the Hunterian Museum of the Royal College of Surgeons of England, and the Wellcome Collection. Students also examine (and enjoy) the market experience at Covent Gardens, the National Gallery, and shops in SoHo and greater London.
This year, a tour of Parliament is in the works, as is a river cruise along the Thames. Day trips are scheduled to local attractions such as Stonehenge, as well as one significant public health venues.
GPH (London) is open to ALL STUDENTS, undergrads as well as graduate students, and participants will earn 5 credits at either the 400 or 600 level. Tier III credit for the course is pending at this time. Travel dates this year are the week after Thanksgiving and into the first week of December. Program costs for this trip will be approximately $2500, plus the cost of 5 tuition credits, and spending money. If you are on financial aid, you will want to keep in mind that the winter intersession is considered a separate term from fall, winter, and spring, and so your financial aid package may need to be adjusted to accommodate paying tuition for GPH-London.
