The Bobcats went onto the track this weekend wanting to show everyone what a team looks like.
A new school record, a first place finish and several top-ten spots later they got the job done.
After finding out this past week that men's track and field would no longer be supported by the Ohio athletic department following the 2007 season, the Bobcats faced 50 other schools at the highly competitive Penn State National Invitational in State College, Pa.
It seemed like there was a little extra motivation this week
coach Clay Calkins said. I'm certain that that had something to do with it.
Distance runner Carime Reinhart broke a school record in the 3,000-meter run with a time of 9:52.58, more than six seconds better than the previous record set by Amy Hansen in 1981.
Reinhart said the whole team was worked-up over what happened this week and that it fueled them.
The competition there was unbelievable said Reinhart. We were definitely running with the best that had a lot to do with how I finished.
Scott Mayle won the long jump, for the second week in a row, with a jump of 7.72 meters beating out 22 other competitors and hitting the NCAA provisional mark for the second time.
The freshmen were not without their share of good performances once again this week. Most notably, a seventh place finish and personal best throw of 14.39 meters by Bahiyjaui Allen in the shot put.
Allen said she cleared her mind of the announcement and focused on her throw.
After I threw it I was in shock
I couldn't believe I threw it that far
said Allen. I always knew I could go that far because I'm strong but my technique wasn't that good. We have been working on my technique for the past couple weeks.
The standards for getting into the meet were high, and the remainder of the team traveled to Findlay this weekend for the Findlay Track & Field Classic where they put up some impressive numbers.
I can't say enough about the team
said Calkins. The performances speak for themselves.
