Springfest rocks on despite cold

About 100 students and Athens locals partied with plenty of music and beer at the daylong music festival Springfest Saturday at Ervin's Big Red Barn and Field.

Springfest is Fallfest's Spring Quarter counterpart. Adam Vogt, an insurance agent with Athens Insurance Services, 48 E. Stimson Ave., teamed up with Paul Lowery in the fall for Fallfest. Vogt said it was such a success that he decided to organize a Springfest as well.

Despite cold weather and wet conditions, Vogt said he was not afraid to lose money on the event. Admission for the event was $10 in advance and $15 at the event. Vogt said he wants to provide a good time for students and added, Don't stop the carnival.

Students pitched tents and set up camp to enjoy the event. One group even brought their own motor home to party in. A bonfire kept concert goers warm while they drank away the afternoon.

To keep themselves entertained between acts, a group of students set up a makeshift baseball game in the field. Using empty Natural Light cases as bases, students staggered around the playing field, beer in hand. Not even the several inches of mud on the field or the blaring music from cover band Driven could pause the game.

Students and locals crowded around the stage, coolers at their sides, during performances.

Springfest's entertainment consisted of music by six up on bikes, Driven, Gypsy Caravan, Three Sided Soul and Lab Rats. The festival also included a Hot Body Contest. And the wet T-shirt contest is going to be great

Vogt said.

Cliff Lefevre and Allan Ritter of Gypsy Caravan came from Columbus to participate with their band in the event. Gypsy Caravan's lead singer attends Ohio University. Lefevre and Ritter said that even with poor weather, the festival had a good location and it was a great time.

Blues-based rock and roll band six up on bikes also was excited for the event. Jakob Wells of the band said Springfest is a great chance to go out and have a good time playing on a nice stage. Pulled together by the universal music forces in January of this year, six up on bikes hopes to get more gigs then head to the studio. Wells said the band's set Saturday was its best yet.

Vogt hopes to make Springfest and Fallfest annual events.
