Post Letter: Textbook bill could benefit future students

The Post, 5/10/10).

As an upcoming college sophomore, I have been interested in the debate going on about the possible passing of Bill 472 (Proposed bill mandating standard textbooks for intro courses sparks controversy The Post, 5/10/10). The House, professors and other college students all seem to have valid points on the subject. Because of the fact that they are discussing doing this with entry-level textbooks only, at this point, has definitely swayed my opinion. As a whole, most college freshmen go into their college venture undecided and have to take classes that are prerequisites in order to move on in their college careers. For this reason, I think that the passing of this bill is a good idea.

Besides saving money, there is the fact that if a student should change their mind and transfer universities, this would be helpful. Also, if they add or drop a class, it would be easier for their books to be returned or sold as used. I believe everyone would start out on a more even playing field no matter what size of college or university they would choose - as some students would love to but cannot afford the higher-priced choices.

Professors who teach these classes know they have taken on the job of teaching entry-level classes, and therefore should realize these are stepping stones for the harder classes to come. Even though they might all have their own style of teaching, the materials and foundation would be the same. Coming fresh out of high school, this choice would make students less overwhelmed; if by chance you are coming from a small school, you would be more comfortable.

Chances are, by the time this bill passes, I could be almost at the end of my college career. They definitely plan to explore the options on this subject to a greater extent. The importance of this is very valid in my opinion; therefore, I hope strong consideration is given to the outcome.
