Football players earn recognition in pre-season lists

The Sporting News recognized three Ohio football players in its annual National College Football Notebook.

Linebacker Matt Muncy and running back Kalvin McRae were both named to the preseason All-MAC First Team while safety Michael Hinton was named the MAC's Defensive Newcomer of the Year.

The magazine offered high praise for Muncy, rating him as the 17th-best inside linebacker in the country. Ohio's active career leader in tackles among the top 20 in the nation last year in total tackles and is earning major preseason recognition. Muncy has been placed on preseason watch lists for the Lott Trophy, given to the nation's Defensive Player of the Year, and the Lombardi Award, for the country's top lineman.

McRae rushed for 1,153 yards for the Bobcats last season, the third most in Ohio history. He ranked 26th in the nation in rushing yards per game, averaging 104.8 yards a contest, and was named to the All-MAC First Team for his performance in 2005. He has led the team in rushing in each of his first two seasons at Ohio.

In high school he was named Defensive Player of the Year and was also an All-State Selection in Virginia. Soccer picks team leaders

Ohio soccer coach Stacy Strauss recently announced that Callie Broomfield and Tiffany Horvath were selected as captains of the squad for the 2006 season.

The captains were chosen by their teammates to lead the team next year and Strauss said she is pleased with the choices.

Tiff and Callie are responsible and committed players

Strauss said. They are passionate about the game and our team. I am confident they will set a strong example in leading this team.

Horvath, a senior, has been a force at forward for the Bobcats the past three seasons and is already fourth in goals in school career records. She was an All-MAC second team selection last season.

Broomfield will be a leader in the midfield, coming off a sophomore season in which she started 11 games.

The team recently concluded its spring exhibition season with their annual Alumni Game last weekend. The game is an event both current and former players look forward to.

It was a fun event Strauss said. I was proud of the effort by the alumni team. It bodes well on the alumni that they can return and put up a good challenge for our team.
