Ohio student pleads guilty to receiving stolen goods

An Ohio University student suspended for his involvement in a robbery agreed to plead guilty to two felonies for a 60-day prison term.

Thomas Collins pleaded guilty to the third-degree felony charge of complicity to aggravated robbery and a fifth-degree felony charge of receiving stolen property at his Tuesday court appearance.

The count of aggravated robbery, a first-degree felony, was dropped, said Mike Westfall, Collins' lawyer.

Conditions of Collins' plea agreement states that he will spend 60 days in jail and speak in the indictment of Matron Church, the alleged lead conspirator of the robbery.

Collins has been cooperative from the beginning, Westfall said.

Collins said at his court appearance that he did help alleged robber Church find the victim, James Stoneberger, though he had not known for certain that it would lead to an incident.

Stoneberger was assaulted and robbed of jewelry and approximately $460 at 4 a.m. on May 10 in a parking lot near South Green, according to court documents.

Stolen goods, such as electronics, drugs and cash valued between $500 and $5,000, were found in Collins' Pickering Hall dorm room following his arrest, according to a May 14 Post article.

The third-degree felony carries a maximum sentence of five years in prison with a $10,000 fine and the fifth-degree felony charge has a maximum penalty of a one-year sentence and $2,500 fine, Ward said.Collins' sentencing is scheduled for Sept. 28 at 9:30 a.m.
