It all started with Miami's goal with about 4 minutes left.
The fans at Pruitt Field Saturday had sat through 65 minutes of scoreless action between the Mid-American Conference rivals until Olivia Miller's goal in the 66th minute.
The score, a rebound off a save by goalie Courtney Seiders, broke a scoreless deadlock. The Bobcats went on to win 2-1 in overtime, and also beat Ball State 7-0 yesterday.
Coach Neil Macmillan immediately called a timeout after the RedHawks' goal.
We knew what we needed to do
sophomore Cathryn Altdoerffer said. We just needed to make sure we controlled the ball kept possession and just worked under pressure. We made it happen.
20 seconds later on the game clock.
The players and fans were jubilant. The Bobcats evened it up, or so they thought.
With 3:33 left, Altdoerffer shot a long ball past the goalie to notch the match at 1-1.
But moments later, the goal was disallowed. Instead of a goal, Ohio was allowed a corner. The refs said Altdoerffer was behind the yellow arc when she shot, making her ineligible to score.
The Bobcats have lost several goals this season due to fouls before the shot.
In the past
we've had goals taken away
Altdoerffer said. I feel like we let it get us down. But this time
we didn't let it affect us.
Instead of feeling deflated, the Bobcats became more determined to tie the game.
It definitely fired us up
sophomore Taylor Brown said. We just wanted to get down there again and put one in the net.
4 seconds later.
The crowd roared again as the Bobcats evened it up. And this time, the goal stuck. Brown scored off a deflection from the left corner near the goalie box.
It was awesome
Brown said. It was kind of like
right back in their face.
Before time expired in regulation, the RedHawks earned two yellow cards within a span of 20 seconds. It meant Ohio had a two-player advantage for the first five minutes of overtime.
5 minutes later.
The advantage went unused. The Bobcats failed to score in the first five minutes of overtime as the RedHawks whacked the ball out of bounds whenever they could to waste time.
1 minute, 20 seconds later.
The Bobcats fired a shot at Miami goalie Sarah Mueller, who stepped out of the net to save it. The ball deflected off Mueller, and Altdoerffer knocked it in for the win.
The forward continued her dominance the next day. The sophomore completed a hat trick in yesterday's blowout of Ball State, notching four goals and an assist on the weekend. The Bobcats pushed their win streak to five.
My thing is
there are hockey gods
Macmillan said. And the hockey gods took care of it.
Usually if you have a goal disallowed and you get a corner like that, if it should have been a goal the first time, that goal goes in off the corner.",",2,Sports,Nathaniel Maund,",",",",",QUICK STATS,OHIO 2
