As the Bobcats ran through defensive sets near the end of their practice yesterday, guard Bubba Walther laid on the third row of the bleachers with a bag of ice over his right ankle.
Earlier in practice, Walther aggravated an injury he suffered Saturday at New Mexico State.
Despite the scare, coach Tim O'Shea said it should not affect Walther's status for Wednesday's game at Bowling Green.
He just tweaked it
O'Shea said. He won't do anything tomorrow so I think he'll be fine by gametime.
Walther originally hurt the ankle at the end of the first half in Saturday's 77-72 loss to the Aggies when he came down awkwardly on it after making a layup.
After two straight poor performances, Walther had his best game as a Bobcat on Saturday, scoring a career-high 25 points. He is third on the team in points per game, averaging 13.1 points per game, and first in the Mid-American Conference in 3-point field goals made per game.
With Ohio's already notoriously weak bench, O'Shea said an injury to any one of his starters would be detrimental to the team.
It's always a concern when one of your key players gets even a tweak O'Shea said, but
knock on wood
we've been fairly healthy.'Officially' irritated
O'Shea said that the Bobcats had to battle more than just the 4,000-foot elevation in Las Cruces, N.M., on Saturday.
The coach said that he was not at all happy with the officiating in Saturday's game and will formally complain to the head of MAC officials.
O'Shea assembled a set of clips that show calls that should not have gone against the Bobcats and calls that should have been made for the team that were not.
These aren't gray-area clips
O'Shea said. These are areas where clearly our guy was fouled and nothing was called.
Forwards Leon Williams and Kenneth van Kempen fouled out and Jerome Tillman had four fouls Saturday.Mic'd up in the letdown
Intermittently throughout Saturday's nationally-televised game, ESPN2 showed O'Shea on the sidelines addressing the team and in the locker room trying to motivate his players.
O'Shea said he wore the microphone to help drum up exposure for the conference and noted that he didn't even notice he was wearing it.
We get very little national attention as a league and as a program
O'Shea said. When you get a chance to expose the program
you want to do so.
