A home-schooled student from Athens has been nominated by Sen. Sherrod Brown to attend the Air Force Academy next year.
William Robe, who is homeschooled in Athens, is hoping to gain admission to the Air Force Academy and is one of only four students from southeastern Ohio to get Senator Brown’s nomination.
Service academy hopefuls need to have a nomination from a congressman or senator from their state to be eligible for admission. Those nominated are not guaranteed acceptance, but are reviewed by each academy’s admissions board, which makes the ultimate decision.
“Ohio schools are training leaders for the next generation of military personnel. I am honored to nominate these outstanding students for our prestigious U.S. Military Service Academies,” said Brown. “These Ohioans embody the integrity and courage needed to represent well and uphold the values of our nations. I am grateful for their dedication to serving out country.”
Brown is able to nominate up to ten students every year for the service academies requiring congressional recommendations. These include the Air Force Academy, the Military Academy at West Point, The Naval Academy, and the Merchant Marine Academy.
Nominations are based on the recommendation of a Service Academy Selection Advisory Committee assembled by Brown. The committee is made up of former academy graduates, parents of academy attendees, and community leaders from throughout the state and they had to conduct rigorous interviews before selecting the final candidates.
