Sheriff Kelly reported to jail for mugshot

Complying with the court’s orders, Athens County Sheriff Pat Kelly reported to the Southeastern Ohio Regional Jail Tuesday morning to take a booking photo and submit his DNA and fingerprints, authorities said.

The sheriff took the booking photo in his Athens County Sheriff uniform.

Jeremy Tolson, warden at the jail, said Kelly arrived at the jail at 9:44 a.m. Tuesday morning. He was released around 10 a.m., according to online booking information. Tolson said it was a “normal procedure.”

“We had no problems,” Tolson said. “He was very professional.”

Kelly will not be incarcerated per a personal recognizance bond accepted by the judge overseeing the case, retired Summit County Judge Patricia Ann Cosgrove.

He is free on a state-requested $50,000 bond and will not have to post bail so long as he attends all of the hearings throughout his court proceedings.

Inmate booking photos and other information is usually made available on the jail’s website, but Kelly’s photo was not uploaded because he’s not staying at the jail, officials said.

Kelly, 63, was arraigned Monday in the Athens County Common Pleas Court on a 25-count indictment charging money laundering, theft in office and perjury, among others. A pretrial is set for Feb. 28 at 1 p.m.

Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine, whose office led a state probe into allegations of wrongdoing against Kelly, filed a motion requesting that Cosgrove address Kelly’s failure to comply with a subpoena that requested confidential informants in Kelly’s possession in September, officials said. That hearing will take place on the same date as the pretrial.

Dan Tierney, a spokesman for DeWine’s office, could not provide the documents pertaining to the motion for this report by press time.
