An Athens County grand jury indicted Constance Connie Zwahlen, a former secretary for Athens County prosecutor, and her husband for felonious drug-related charges resulting from an October drug investigation.
The grand jury indicted Connie Zwahlen, 33, for six counts of trafficking and purchasing illegal drugs and one count for allegedly aiding her husband with the cultivation of marijuana. Hans Zwahlen, 42, faces one count for cultivation of marijuana.
A team of law enforcement officers from southeastern Ohio worked with U.S. Customs agents and police from Clayton County, Ga., to take the Zwahlens into custody at a Georgia airport in October. They were suspected of smuggling hashish, white widow marijuana and marijuana seeds from Amsterdam, according to police.
The Ohio task force found 20 pounds of marijuana, marijuana paraphernalia, photographs indicating marijuana production, and a sawed-off shotgun after searching the Zwahlens' home at 5776 Long Run Road.
The Zwahlens have received summons to appear in Athens County Court of Common Pleas for their arraignments. They had been detained in Georgia but are now back in Athens, according to the special prosecutor on the case, Michael Spahr.
