Photography contest enters digital age

More than 2,000 photojournalism entries from across the world have been entered into a competition for 29 awards in the Best of Photojournalism contest today through Saturday in Bromley Hall.

What they're looking at are entries from newspapers and magazines across the country

including international work said Stan Alost, photojournalism professor and contest coordinator.

Four internationally recognized judges will evaluate images from magazines such as Sports Illustrated, Newsweek and Time Magazine, along with newspaper entries from the New York Times and Los Angeles Times, among others, he said.

Traditionally, judges view the physical images, but for the first time since the contest's inception in 2001, judges will view the photographs electronically through a projection screen and Portable Document Format (PDF) images, Alost said.

Judges will select winners among the entries in 29 categories, including newspaper front pages, magazine covers and picture of the year by team and by individual, he said. Many entries this year will focus on the New Orleans devastation after Hurricane Katrina, he said.

(Winners get) recognition that is very significant in the industry Alost said. It makes and propels people's careers.
