An Ohio University football player was charged with underage consumption yesterday after a fight about whether OU or Ohio State University has the better football team.
Kyle Robbins, a junior linebacker, was one of several students involved in a debate between OU and OSU football fans, said Lt. Ralph Harvey of the Athens Police Department. The dispute occurred at about 1 a.m. yesterday at Souvlaki's Mediterranean Garden at 9 W. State St.
One OSU fan, also an OU student, said he exited the restaurant when a different OU football player became really upset.
He was followed down West State Street to near High Street by a few students, including the football player who allegedly punched him from behind, the student said.
Observers helped to pull the player off the student, who then called 9-1-1.
The injured student was not certain if he wanted to pursue charges, Harvey said.
The case is still under investigation as an assault, Harvey said. The police could not confirm whether or not a football player was a suspect.
The Post will not disclose the name of the player who hit the student because he has not been charged.
