On Feb. 1, eight local citizens were arrested during a protest at the K&H Partners injection well site on U.S. 50 near Coolville. The Athens Friends Meeting (Quaker) would like to acknowledge both the disciplined behavior of the 150 demonstrators and the respect and professional manner of local law officers in making the arrests (according to a Feb. 3 article in The Post).
Such actions recall our Quaker history of activism in support of the end of slavery, and women’s and civil rights in more recent times. We live in a society that lauds freedom of speech and dissent and the rule of law. It is encouraging to see both in action in our local community.
Beth Amoriya is a clerk for the Athens Friends Meeting.
