Ohio found something more than two victories on Saturday ' they found redemption.
After dropping his match against Virginia last season with his team in a 15-15 tie, heavyweight Marcus Adelman again found the team's fate in his hands Saturday.
The Bobcats held a 15-12 advantage going into the final match, but this time Adelman was able to grind out a 4-1 decision to secure the victory.
This was huge. I loved it
Adelman said. Especially with this being my senior season and my team needing one right at the end. It's a great feeling.
Ohio's 133-pound wrestler Terry Jackson also atoned for last season's loss to Virginia's No. 16 Eric Albright.
Jackson secured an 8-5 decision with a takedown late in the third. The win was his first against a ranked opponent and comes a week after facing Buffalo's No. 17 Mark Budd. Jackson said the win took a lot of weight off his shoulders.
I've had some tough matches the last couple weeks and came up short Jackson said. It was good to get a win here today.
The 'Cats (15-6, 2-1 Mid-American Conference) also got wins from Clay Tucker at 149 pounds, 157-pounder Jake Frerichs, Jacob Ison at 165 and 197-pounder Larry Reichard.
The solid performance against the Cavaliers (6-7) pleased coach Joel Greenlee.
It means we're on the right track he said. I think you see in our guys here today that all the hard work we've been putting in is finally paying off.
Ohio notched another revenge victory Saturday morning when they topped Ashland, which won last year's tilt, 16-14.
Holding just a four-point lead going into the final two matches, the Bobcats once again had to rely on the strong closing efforts of Reichard and Adelman. The pair came through with two decisions, giving Ohio the 24-14 win.
Reichard said the closer's role isn't always easy.
It makes you nervous
he said. Going into those last matches knowing that I have to win and Marcus has to perform very well is nerve-racking.
Wins from Jackson, Frerichs and Ison set up the victory, but in the end it was back end of the lineup that downed the Eagles (2-6).
Larry and I have talked about it
Adelman said. If we could start with our two matches then maybe we'd be on a roll. But we don't mind doing it. Someone has to
so it might as well be us.
