4 OU students win national scholarships in areas of interest

Four Ohio University students recently received nationally competitive scholarships.

Jess Wilhelm, McKenzie Koss, Travis Glendenning and Mark Watson all won scholarships from their respective fields of study.

Wilhelm, a sophomore astrophysics major and The Post columnist, and Koss, a sophomore biological sciences and biochemistry double major, both won the Goldwater Scholarship, which is worth $7,500 a year for two years. The scholarships are awarded each year to 300 students nationwide who are interested in math, science or engineering.

Koss, who gained research experience with NASA during the summer, said the scholarship might open up opportunities to do more research.

Winning (the scholarship) just provides more motivation to continue doing research

she said.

Glendenning, a senior integrated social studies education major, received the James Madison Memorial Fellowship worth $24,000 divided over two years. The scholarship is given to about 55 people nationwide each year.

The scholarship, which is given to future graduate students interested in teaching American history with a focus on the Constitution, may vary in amount depending on costs of the graduate school the student chooses.

Money is not the only benefit of winning a scholarship, Glendenning said. During the summer of 2006, he has the opportunity to go to Georgetown University to study the Constitution with members of the foundation's board of trustees, such as Sen. Ted Kennedy, D-Mass. and Sen. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah.

Watson, a senior art history and painting double major, received a scholarship from the Andrew W. Mellon Fellowship, which is given to 90 students pursuing studies in the humanities. The scholarship pays for students' tuition and an additional $17,500.

OU has had one student a year for the past three years win the award, Watson said.

It's good that OU a state school has had so many people get this award

he said. I don't want to generalize

but most of the other students who received this award were from Ivy League schools and other really prestigious universities.

Watson also said receiving an award from professionals in his field of pursuit is a confidence booster.
