Resolution would create offices for student trustees

Student trustees may be granted offices if a proposal by Student Senate goes through.

Academic Affairs Commissioner Jesse Neader is sponsoring a resolution that would grant the trustees offices and allow them to maintain office hours during which they can meet with students.

Senate's goal when they ran last year was communication

Neader said. One channel of that is to make sure student trustees are accountable.

Neader said the resolution does not specify where the trustees' offices would be located, saying the senate would leave it up to the administration to pick the best place. The resolution also does not specify a timetable on implementation for the offices, but senators are aiming for some time before the end of the school year.

President Robert Leary said ideally the trustees would hold office hours to meet with students as well as using the offices for other work related to the Board of Trustees.

We would like to see the office hours start by the end of this quarter Neader said.

The resolution, which has been through a few drafts, has been reviewed by most of the senators and is being revised. Both trustees, Chauncey Jackson and Kyle Triplett, have been given copies of the resolution. Aside from a small amount of input from Jackson, the trustees have stayed out of it Neader said.

Both trustees have been pretty supportive of the idea

Leary said.

Triplett said he supports the resolution, adding that office hours would assist him and future trustees in obtaining student input.

Student trustees represent the student perspective on the (Board of Trustees)

Triplett said. I think it's a valid resource for trustees to hear students' concerns

questions and comments.

Student Senators are required to keep weekly office hours to meet with concerned students. Recently, several Ohio University administrators, including President Roderick McDavis and Vice President for Student Affairs Kent Smith have also maintained monthly office hours. McDavis' hours usually attract around 12 students, though that number has decreased in recent months.

The resolution should be introduced and discussed during the Jan. 13 senate meeting, Neader said.
