The northern part of Court Street will be closed to traffic and pedestrians for construction that will last until mid-September.
The City of Athens announced the next step of the North Court Street Infrastructure Improvements Project, which will rebuild piping under the street and the bricks that make up its surface, according to a news release from the Athens Department of Engineering and Public Works.
Athens City Council worked closely with Public Works Director Andy Stone to finalize the project, said councilman Kent Butler, D-1st Ward, adding that Stone worked on a few federal and state grants to help make the project more affordable.
“The enhancement of the North Court area is going to help residents, businesses and the city be more efficient, especially since we are repairing sidewalks along with the sewer line,” Butler said.
Beginning Thursday, the street will be closed to traffic from Rose Alley (across from the Import House) to Carpenter Street. Also, sections of the sidewalks near North Court Street might temporarily be closed for the safety of pedestrians.
The project is expected to be completed by Sept. 14.
York Paving Company won the bid for the project and will work to replace the storm tunnel under North Court Street near Fern Alley, reconstruct the brick pavement on North Court Street from Carpenter Street to Fern Alley and also repair other sections of the storm sewer.
The project will also complete sidewalk repairs on East State Street, Grosvenor Street, Franklin Street and Morris Avenue.
Business between West State Street and Carpenter Street will stay open during the project.
