The Ohio swimming and diving teams excelled this past weekend at their meet at Miami.
While the final scores show that they were not victorious against the RedHawks, they had many individuals record conference-best times at the competition.
Emily Wylam recorded a time of 57.87 in the 100-yard backstroke for the win and a top time for the Mid-American Conference. She also swam the 200 backstroke in 2:03.83 for another MAC-best.
Wylam said she surprised herself with her fast times at Miami, but she owed it to the fact that the RedHawks are a rival and everyone gets fired up at Miami.
Though she is happy with her times, she knows she is now a target for the rest of the MAC swimmers.
It puts a lot of pressure on me come conference time
she said.
Wylam also was named this week's MAC Swimmer of the Week. It is the third time she has been given that award, the most of any female in the conference.
This year I didn't even expect to get MAC Swimmer of the Week once let alone three times Wylam said, adding that she thought last years honorees had immeasurable talent.
Also at the Miami meet, Bobcat Karen Liddy was clocked at a MAC-best time of 2:21.93 in the 200 breaststroke.
On the men's side, Jason Reutter posted a 2:08.48 in the 200 breaststroke, good for third best in the conference so far this season.
The Bobcats will see if their success in the conference can hold up when they compete at the conference championships Feb. 23-25 in Akron for the women and March 2-4 at the Aquatic Center for the men.
Bria reaches landmark victory
Women's basketball coach Lynn Bria achieved win number 75 when her team defeated Northern Illinois on the road Jan. 28.
That milestone moves Bria into the second spot on Ohio's all-time wins list.
Marsha Reall, who coached nine seasons from 1990-99, holds the top position with 122 wins.
Bria is currently in her seventh season with the Bobcats.
'Baseball America' acknowledges a pair of Bobcats
Ohio's Anthony Gressick has been named Preseason All-MAC along with Kurt Smith, who was named the conference Preseason Freshman of the Year by the publication Baseball America.
Gressick was also recently dubbed MAC Preseason Player of the Year by Collegiate Baseball.
In 2005, Gressick posted a 2.67 ERA as a pitcher. He also had seven home runs, hitting .308.
As a high school senior, Smith had a 1.70 ERA, striking out 94 hitters in 57 innings.
Although he said he is happy to have received the early recognition, Gressick said it does not mean as much as what happens during the actual games.
It's still just a preseason thing
he said.
Gressick added that his main focus is on the team doing well and will try to perform to meet these added expectations on himself.
Coach Joe Carbone said that it is nice to have the talents of Gressick and Smith recognized, but it is up to the team as a whole to prove their merit once competition begins.
Once we start the season they don't mean anything
Carbone said.
