In these fractious times, it must be clear to everyone that we need representatives who are capable of speaking in clear, measured, tones; who can see the bigger picture without losing sight of the details; who are level-headed no matter what's going on around them; and who can reach across the divides that so painfully separate us.
Ted Strickland and Debbie Phillips are such people. After 16 years of Republican control of the statehouse, it is time that our priorities of adequately funding our schools (including our state colleges and universities), making affordable health care available to all Ohioans, and repairing our crumbling infrastructure get the attention they deserve. We can count on Strickland and Phillips to advance this people-friendly agenda.
I have watched Phillips in action for a number of years, and I have always been impressed by what a good listener she is, by how thoughtfully she considers what she hears and what she says. Phillips treats everyone she meets, including her political opponents, with respect. This is a fine attribute, and one whose value in the political arena cannot be underestimated. Phillips can hold the temperature of discourse to a level where, instead of getting burned, people can cook up something good we can all share.
I urge everyone who is ready for a much-needed change in our state government to vote for Strickland and Phillips on Nov. 7.Wendy McVicker writes from Athens.
