YourTurn: In wake of shootings, schools need to dig deeper into students' past

The incident at Virginia Tech got me thinking, and I am sure the rest of Ohio University as well. Am I safe while paying thousands of dollars for a higher education? Well, I should be.

What kind of background checks does Ohio University do before they let someone take classes, or do they do any kind of check at all? Colleges and universities across the U.S. should do background checks to ensure that their students are safe. This is not just safety for the students, but for the faculty and professors as well. Do colleges and universities even care about the safety of what is around them, or do they just want the money? Does one automatically get accepted if he or she has a high enough G.P.A. and ACT/SAT score? I hope not.

Being a sophomore, I never thought about this issue until what happened at Virginia Tech.

I do believe in people becoming better and giving them a second chance, but how far does that go? I know that I do not want someone that has committed a crime living next to me all year and not knowing it. Ohio University needs to do something about this issue and ensure all students that they are safe. I thought they would take more action after what happened, but I have not heard of any change yet. Safety is what I should get when paying thousands of dollars.' Amy Troxell is a sophomore communications and business major
