Women's Golf: Bobcats start season slow, finish 19th

The Bobcats weren't able to get their spring season started on the right foot this weekend.

The team finished in 19th place out of 20 teams at the Duramed Collegiate Invitational at Rio Verde this weekend in its first action since October. Ohio shot 325, 321 and 322 respectively for each of the three rounds.

Coach Kelly Ovington could not be reached for comment.

Sophomore Erin Cahill was the leader for the Bobcats. She shot 240 (27 over par), which tied her for 69th place.

Her lowest round was a 78 on Saturday.

Following Cahill was sophomore Lindsay Bergman, who shot 241 (28 over par). She finished in 72nd place.

Rounding out the rest of the lineup for Ohio was Jordan Fesh, Colleen Lienesch and Lauren Bergman.

Fesh finished in 78th place with a 243. Lienesch placed in 84th (246) and Bergman was 97th (254).

The Bobcats had said before the tournament that it might be difficult to recover from such a long break. The team didn't get to practice much on actual courses during the break, making it very difficult for them to prepare for its first event.

Kansas took the title, scoring an 883. Meghan Gockel tied for first in the individual standings with a five-over par 218. Sara Wikstrom of Arkansas-Little Rock was the other first-place finisher. Gockel defeated Wikstrom in a one-hole playoff to take home the event.

Ohio's next event will be the University of Cincinnati Spring Invitational. The tournament begins March 27. It will be played at Plantation Inn Golf Course in Crystal River, Fla.
